Pembroke Boats

With the rather dreary financial crisis dampening our British good spirits, many are deciding not to travel abroad this year. It makes no sense to spend money on flights only to be stung by the decline in the value of the pound as you reach your chosen destination. Instead, make life easier for yourselves and point your car in the direction for a Welsh holiday. There are many fantastic places in West Wales which you may have heard of or already been to, Tenby, Pembroke Castle or St David's Cathedral, but here are 5 lesser known places which are worth a visit.

Solva - Believed to be the prettiest harbour in Wales, this village is definitely the jewel of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. It still has a working harbour and is extremely picturesque with small fishing boats, painted houses, lovely gift shops and great cafes and restaurants. A visit to the Solva Wooden Mill is recommended; as is a sailing trip with Solva Sailboats which boasts RYA recognised teaching. Don't leave this village without a lovely walk along the beach, often bathed in sun as it apparently boasts the sunniest climate in Wales.

Druidstone Haven Beach -This is a unique piece of Welsh coastline which is totally unspoilt and wildly dramatic. After watching an episode of Grand Designs I was amazed by the "Tellytubby" house which is worth finding as it is set into the side of the cliff and overlooks this stunning beach. The beach was not a disappointment; isolated and beautiful with boulders and rock pools, it is somewhere to spend a day or two. There are nearby riding stables in the pretty village of Nolton Haven where there is the family run Nolton Stables which organises pony trekking straight to this beach; the sight of a horse galloping along the shoreline will make you want to have a go....

Laugharne -A scenic medieval Castle town on an estuary, Laugharne is steeped in history and once home to writer Dylan Thomas. You can take in the fantastic 12th century castle then wander down on to the beach for a breath of fresh air. A trip to the Boathouse is along the cliff above is important as Thomas wrote much of his work here. As you learn about his contribution to literature you can enjoy a delicious lunch or high tea in the small tearoom with fabulous views. This town is also rich in crafts shops, offers great restaurants, cafes and a pottery.

Broadhaven South Beach -A gentle walk from the pretty Village of Bosherton past the local church and the lily ponds takes you to the cliffs above Broadhaven south beach. Alternatively you can use the car park at the top of the cliff. There is a steep descent down to the beach but once there you will be happy to stay put for a while as the beach is stunning. There are great dunes as you arrive at the beach and an expanse of soft white sand leading to the waters edge: Broadhaven South is a great place to spend a day with a picnic hamper and a good book and you can view some kite surfing as adrenalin junkies leap from the dunes and make fascinating watching.

Islands of Skomer and Skokholm- For those wildlife lovers, a trip off the coast of West Wales to the islands of the Marine Nature Reserve is a must. These islands lie off some of Wales' best beaches in St Brides Bay, and are populated by immense sea bird colonies, grey seals and dolphins. Skomer is home to 500,000 breeding sea birds, sees 150 grey seal pups born each year and is the largest island. Daily trips to Skomer can be organised through Dale sailing, departing from Dale or from the Marloes Peninsula. A trip to neighbouring Skokholm is only accessible through prior arrangement with the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, and is home to the third largest Manx Shearwater colony. There is also the nightly shearwater boat trip with Shearwater Safaris, plus fabulous dolphin and porpoise watching. This is a real treat, an area of natural beauty and abundant wildlife and often missed by holiday makers.
